Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Harlow Council to recruit a Casual Ambulance Driver

Harlow is a district of contrasts and an ideal location to both live and work. The town itself is thriving, with excellent shopping and leisure facilities for all ages. We have good road links to the M11 and M25 and excellent rail connections to London and Stansted Airport, just 35 minutes and 20 minutes away from Harlow respectively.

Job Purpose:

  • To be part of a team that delivers the highest quality care and safety to people being transported by ambulance to and from the Leah Manning Centre.

The Role:

We are looking to recruit casual ambulance drivers to provide support for existing staff and to undertake ambulance driving duties at the Leah Manning Centre.

The role will involve transporting frail elderly people to and from the Leah Manning centre from various locations throughout the town. You will be responsible for making sure our transport vehicles are kept clean and taken to our partner agency when servicing and MOTs are scheduled.

Hours of work will be casual and flexible to meet the needs of the service. Working times are generally around 8.30am – 11.00am and 2.30pm – 4.30pm.

A good geographical knowledge of Harlow is essential, and applicants must be in possession of a full clean driving licence, which includes category D1. The successful applicant must be willing to undertake training or hold a valid MIDAS certificate.

Experience of working with older people is essential.

Any offer of employment will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Duties Include but Not Limited to –

  • Transport clients to and from the Centre following procedures for loading and unloading vehicles to ensure client safety.
  • To be responsible for transporting day care clients to and from the Centre following procedures loading and unloading the vehicles, using both the steps and tail lift ensuring client safety.
  • To be responsible for ensuring clients have their personal belongings and door keys with them.
  • To be conversant with the problems related to the clients travelling on the vehicles.
  • To be able to deal with any emergency that takes place whilst away from the Centre, to assess the situation and take appropriate action.
  • To ensure safety by carrying out checks on both vehicle and safety equipment. To report any defects to the Service and Contracts Manager or their representative immediately.
  • To maintain daily log sheet records.
  • To work with people who suffer from dementia and those of high dependency.
  • To be responsible for the care and safety of clients attending assisted and special needs day care and to follow their individual care and transport plan.
  • To assist with the transportation of clients to and from their own homes in specially adapted vehicles with tail lifts following set procedures.
  • Encourage self-motivation of clients, with knowledge of their capabilities and medical conditions.
