Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Braintree District Council to recruit an Environmental Health Officer on an initial 3-month temporary basis. Please note that you will be required to work in the Council offices or in the District during the placement.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated team player to undertake the full range of duties working in a geographical area of the district.

The Housing & Pollution specialist will undertake our HMO licensing, inspect properties for HHSRS compliance and carry out appropriate enforcement, respond to complaints of nuisance, filthy and verminous premises, permitted processes and contaminated land, and serving notices as necessary.

The role will also respond to planning and licensing consultations and play an active role in delivering any public health initiatives that we are involved in.

The Role:

The role will also respond to planning and licensing consultations and play an active part in delivering any public health initiatives that we are involved in.

 Principle Accountabilities: 

  • Investigate complaints and requests for service in the area and function for which you are responsible.
  • Ensure that all matters of Environmental significance occurring within the area are recorded and pursue action, either personally or through others, to secure Environmental Health compliance.
  • Carry out the work within a team of officers and cover the work of absent colleagues.
  • Support, contribute and comply with quality practices as described within the Corporate Quality Policy and as directed by departmental and team plans/management.
  • Attend and advise Area Committees, if required, to present reports on any functions for which you are responsible.
  • Ensure that the Council and Directorate safety policies are observed.
  • Apply and actively promote the principles of the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy in all areas of employment and service delivery.
  • Advise the Environmental Health Manager if any of the duties and responsibilities of the post cannot be carried out.
  • Willingness and ability to work outside normal office hours when required.
  • Any other duties as required to support the business, including maintaining business continuity and during civil emergencies.
  • To apply and actively promote the principles of the Council’s Safeguarding Procedure in all areas of employment and service delivery.

The Experience You Will Bring:

  • Holds a Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent (i.e. Diploma in Environmental Health)
  • Registered with Environmental Health Registration Board
  • Understand the needs of all customers in respect of the various activities that are regulated by the team
  • Experience of securing regulatory compliance though various means
  • HMO licensing and HHSRS enforcement experience
  • Statutory nuisance investigation experience
