Maldon District Council is seeking to employ a qualified and experienced Environmental Health Officer (Protection) to work within our busy, multi-skilled service for an initial 3-month period.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Have responsibility for a personal caseload of service requests, ensure cases are correctly prioritised, managed appropriately and are resolved within appropriate timescales.

  • Be able to make independent decisions on the progression of service requests using knowledge of statutory provisions and powers.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, legislation, professional codes of practice, and health and safety requirements.
  • Assist with the delivery of at least three specialist areas of Environmental Health: Air Quality, Private Sector Housing, Contaminated Land, Environmental Permitting, Private Water Supplies, Food Hygiene Inspections, Noise Nuisance, Health & Safety, Licensing, Shellfish Sampling, Filthy & Verminous, Caravan Parks, Drainage & Flooding, Environmental Enforcement, Animal Welfare.
  • Seek to build a deeper understanding in three or more specialist areas through personal learning and relevant qualifications/CPD.
  • Adhere to Council policies and corporate ways of working as directed by your line manager.
  • Support the delivery of projects and process improvements to help the service achieve efficiency savings, improved resilience and mitigate against risk.
  • Share specialist knowledge within the team so that individual development and high customer service standards are achieved.
  • Ensure that enquiries, complaints, and FOIs are proactively responded to in advance of the deadline.
  • To maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.
  • Update systems regularly and accurately to make sure customer records are up to date and data protection guidance is always followed.
  • Follow all Health & Safety procedures when conducting day to day duties, ensuring relevant training is up to date and all incidents, accidents and near misses are reported via SharePoint.
  • Work with members, partners and colleagues across the Council so all relevant stakeholders are engaged and informed of service specific activities.
  • Be a role model for the service, demonstrating honesty, integrity, resilience and compassion and focussing on communication, personal development and wellbeing.

The Experience you will bring:

  • The experience will need to be a minimum of 3 years in an EHO role dealing with nuisance complaints and other environmental protection statutory duties
  • Qualifications required would be a MSc in Environmental Health (not Environmental Sciences)
  • Membership with the CIEH is ideal but not essential
