The Role

Please note that this position is being offered on a part time basis, on an annualised hours (3 hours per annum guaranteed) contract. The current / most recent pattern of working days and hours can be seen below – we can be flexible on days (Monday to Friday), times (Morning or Afternoon session) and location moving forward but some of the sessions must be delivered face to face, which can be done at any ACL location of the successful applicant’s choice and will be discussed / confirmed in the interview. Ideally, we are looking for the successful candidate to start work on the 1st of September 2025 but for the right candidate this could be earlier or later in the year.

Current Working Pattern:

  • Tuesday: 9.30am till 11.30am at ACL Colchester.
  • Thursday: 9.30am till 11.30am and 1pm till 3pm via online delivery. 

The Opportunity

Adult Community Learning are looking for a qualified Makaton teacher to deliver our Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 courses face to face at our centres and online. We are looking for someone who works well independently and as part of a teaching team. We use a range of delivery models including classroom-based, online and hybrid.

Interview Dates: Monday 28th of July and / or Thursday 31st July 2025 on a virtual basis, via MS Teams.

Accountabilities:

  • Motivate and inspire learners to promote achievement and develop their skills to enable progression.
  • Plan and deliver effective learning programmes for diverse groups or individuals in a safe and inclusive environment, following ACL safeguarding procedures.
  • Address the needs of learners and work creatively to overcome individual barriers to learning.
  • Enable learners to share responsibility for their own learning and assessment, setting goals that stretch and challenge.
  • Apply appropriate and fair methods of assessment and provide constructive and timely feedback to support progression and achievement.
  • Maintain and update your teaching / training expertise, vocational competence, and digital skills.
  • Contribute to organisational development and quality improvement through collaboration with others.
  • To initially assess learners’ starting points and monitor their progress, set challenging tasks and objectives, and build on and extend learning for all learners.
  • To support learners to develop personal, social and employability skills for them to progress into further learning or jobs that meet local and national needs.

The Experience You Will Bring:

Essential:

  • Makaton teaching qualifications with Level 4 Makaton qualification.
  • A good knowledge of the teaching content for Makaton qualifications from L1 - L4
  • Competent user of ICT.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate and raise aspirations of learners through your enthusiasm and knowledge.

Desirable:

  • Experience of teaching/training adults.
  • Good understanding of social and cultural diversity, equality of opportunity, inclusion, and safeguarding.
  • Minimum of Level 2 in English and maths.
