The Opportunity

Place Services is a multi-disciplinary consultancy within Essex County Council providing environmental and planning services to the Council, local authorities, and other public bodies across the UK. Our purpose is to support the public sector to deliver sustainable development. We do that by enhancing and conserving the natural, historic, and built environment, and achieving well-designed places. The Technical Assistant will work with our consultants to support the delivery of our services.

The post holder will provide a diverse range of administrative and technical support, including undertaking supervised specialist tasks; information and data management; and communications and meetings.

This post will focus on supporting our specialist teams and will provide an opportunity to gain an appreciation of, and experience in, one or more environmental disciplines, with the potential to serve as a route into an environmental career.

The role requires an energetic, self-motivated individual with a good academic background; excellent communication and information management skills; good organisational abilities; a methodical, collaborative and client focused approach; and a keen desire to learn.

About the role

As a technical assistant, you will be responsible for supporting the operational delivery of our services by:

  • Supporting the preparation of high-quality digital outputs, including reports, quotes, bids, tenders, event, learning and marketing material. 
  • Managing systems and information, including work records and data. 
  • Enhancing Place Services recognition and reputation through communications with our clients and members of the public, keeping our website up-to-date and managing social media posts. 
  • Supporting meetings and events, through hosting, note taking, calendar management and document circulation. 
  • Using specialist software and systems to raise purchase orders, issue invoices and analyse timesheets. 
  • Completing supervised specialist tasks.

About You

We are looking for well-educated candidates who have experience delivering technical and/or administrative tasks and activities in a business, planning or environmental context.

  • You will be well-organised and methodical with good time management skills and the ability to prioritise your work across a wide range of tasks, activities, and deadlines. 
  • Motivated by the desire to deliver great customer service and with passion for the environment you will be an effective communicator. 
  • As someone who thrives when they are working as part of a team, you will take satisfaction from supporting your colleagues and be able to establish good working relationships. 
  • You will be able to use common software packages to manage and present information and data, with good attention to detail and analytical skills. 
  • With an awareness of health and safety and well-being you will help us to implement safe working practices and a positive well-being regime. 
  • As somebody who welcomes change, you will support continuous improvement and innovation across our service.
